COMMUNITY PROFILE

A disaster-prone area

Located at about 377 kilometers South of Manila in the Province of Camarines Sur, Naga City has it all from tall buildings, shopping malls, business establishments, modern subdivisions, historical places down to some tourist destinations, having been hailed as the educational, commercial, and religious center of the Philippine Administrative Region of Bicol in the Southeastern tip of Luzon.

The 27 barangays which have an estimated total population of 160,510 in 2007 occupy the city’s 8,488 agricultural hectares of territory. They are situated in the lowland basin–like Western sections and crisscrossed by creeks and waterways flowing from the upland areas in the Eastern  part of Mt. Isarog.

Naturally, when a typhoon passes the Bicol region, it can easily leave the entire place flooded, especially during unprecedented volume of rainfall.

The 27 flood-prone barangays of Naga  City are as follows:

Abella

Liboton

Bagumbayan Norte

Mabolo
Bagumbayan Sur Pacol
Balatas Panicuason
Calauag Peñafrancia
Cararayan Sabang
Carolina San Felipe
Concepcion Grande San Francisco
Concepcion Pequeña San Isidro

Against all odds

For a first class city but a disaster-prone community like Naga City, taking precautionary measures is indeed very much needed. This is the very reason why the research team finds it relevant to clarify the underlying issues surrounding Mike Padua’s public service of giving weather advisory apart from that of PAGASA.
